multiplayer is here

We thought we’d update you on what happened with the multiplayer pre-alpha launch yesterday:

At first it was fun and there were some great moments. It was awesome seeing Madattak hovering around the skyline shooting from up high, and freaked me out driving round the corner to see Graybierd’s Gunny towering over me. Ric was having tons of fun driving around, and from what I could see was getting blasted into tiny bits quite a lot.

A number of issues became quickly apparent in the launch and we’re working hard to fix the major ones ASAP. Here is a list of the biggest ones:

Forever stuck in a queue 🙁

Initially when we started the server, the queue positions where reducing very quickly. But after about an hour the queue times got longer and longer and there seemed to be less and less players to shoot when you got to Mars. This is actually a bug on the server where the server thinks it is full, when actually there is only 1 player driving around it – for ages looking for someone to shoot. We’re trying to find this bug to fix it now.

NB: We’re going to put in a quick ‘plaster’ fix for this today which will simply reset the server (takes just 30 seconds) once every hour. This will keep the server running until we get the fix in.

Major lag when large Robots came into view \ started shooting

There are two main things we’re going to do to fix the lag. One thing is to optimize the game so that the impact of larger Robots is minimized and the server and client FPS maintained at a good level. The second is to introduce a new feature we’re calling the ‘Engineering Potential Meter’ or ‘EPM’. This limits how many cubes you can put on a Robot based on the level of Robocrafter you are, so as you level up the EPM will allow you to build bigger Robots. We expect that the limits will be set very high so the vast majority of Robots we’ve been seeing on YouTube etc. will be fine. Our aim is to make sure that you can still make huge Robots, and at the same time make sure the playing experience is consistent and performs well regardless of what Robot the enemy player decides to bring into battle. Later on we can introduce a no-limits sandbox mode to.

Connection Issues

We’ve been seeing a lot of ‘time outs’ and ‘Network Connection Issue’ errors and we’re looking into these.

    yeah we are still having a server problem – it crashes gradually over time, Ed is fixing it, in the mean time he has to reset it periodically to get it to fix…

    i can never join a server it always says “position in que 1” and i can join if i ever get to playing my robot has 2 level 1 front cannons, 8 level 1 top cannons, 2 level 2 top cannons, 2 level 3 top cannons

    Omgggggggggg the connecting to sever for multiplayer takes sooo long i can NEVER play online D: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    Good game all, also sorry for those who I blasted with my tank that had guns everywhere on it, break down if you saw me:
    2 level 1 front guns
    3 level 2 guns
    5 level 1 guns
    a glass half dome that reached the back.
    All white with no black cubes on it.

    Two people have seen my giant cube, and they’re the only two that will ever. I’m working on destroying it right now. And my gosh, it’s harder to destroy this thing than it was to build it! Grr. :l
