Hello there.

I’m Brian and I’m going to write a little about the AI in Robocraft. We intend to make a game that is primarily PvP so why do we have AI? Very soon we’re going to add some laser cannons and they wouldn’t be any fun without something to aim at. Even better if it’s a moving target, so that’s where our AI comes in.

At first the AI will be rather simple. He’ll drive around, minding his own business. He’ll try not to crash into anything but he doesn’t know how to use guns yet. That will come later. For the moment we want to put something in your hands as soon as possible so we started with steering.

Steering is arguably one of the AI’s biggest challenges. In Robocraft one of the main goals we have is to bring a huge amount of freedom to the robots you can create. Personally, I’m really looking forward to seeing the crazy creations everyone comes up with. I also want the AI to be able to drive every one of them. He doesn’t cheat, he doesn’t get any special control over his machine and does everything the same way a player would. This adds quite a bit of complexity but it’ll be a lot of fun making it work.

Sometime next week we’ll have an update with laser cannons and AI to target. In the mean time here’s a picture of the AI driving one of the test robots.

Yeah, I understand what you mean 🙂 You’re right, this post was written a couple of months ago, before we had added the AI. We haven’t been focused on the AI lately but if that changes we’ll make another blog post 🙂
